DESCRIPTION
Filippo Brunelleschi, was called to draw the project of the new San Lorenzo church. The Church, still today, carries inside the real sense of the Renaissance art. Just around the corner of Basilica of Saint Lawrence, on the rear, you can access the Cappelle Medicee, a Pantheon of the Medici. Cappelle Medicee include the Sagrestia Nuova, built by Michelangelo. A perfect union between sculpture and architecture, the Sagrestia Nuova holds the tombs of Giuliano di Nemours and Lorenzo di Urbino, with the allegories of Night and Day, Dusk and Dawn.

Between the Dome and Palazzo Medici Riccardi, there is an area that shines in its own light: San Lorenzo, with its leather and souvenirs market and the central market dating back the last 1800s (with a very good restaurant on the first floor).

Unveiled in 393 by Sant’Ambrogio. Like each respectable family, the Medici wanted a family church that was close to their house in via Larga – now via Cavour.
Therefore, Messer Filippo Brunelleschi, a venerable Renaissance architect, was called to draw the project of the new San Lorenzo church (destroyed at that time).
The Church, still today, carries inside the real sense of the Renaissance art: the perfect formula of circle and square, the perspective clear lines attracting your eyes to the central altar: an ‘accessible’ and human-centred space, which makes visitors at their ease.
A new architecture. Being a gathering of treasures, a guided tour of San Lorenzo and Cappelle Medicee can complete the general overview of Florence at the time of the Medici.
Around the corner of Basilica you can access the Cappelle Medicee.
Cappelle Medicee include Cappella dei Principi, a XVII century Baroque chest made of marbles and precious stones of Opificio delle Pietre Dure, and Sagrestia Nuova, built by Michelangelo in response to Brunelleschi’s Sagrestia Vecchia (inside the Basilica).
