The Medici Family Tour

A tour that leads you to the deepest Renaissance time, from the beginning of the 1400s to the disappearance of one of the most influent families ever seen in Italy. Giovanni and Cosimo the Elder, his son, were the first ones of a secular lineage of bankers and politicians first, dukes and grand dukes then, who determined the destiny of Florence, three centuries, in different times and ways, for through personal and clear policies.

From the Republic to the Grand Duchy, from the Gothic art to the Renaissance.

Conflicts, intrigues, alchemy, the Papacy, the German Empire, the French Kingdom, affairs and secret agreements, in a power escalation during which the Medici got to build themselves a credibility, underlying that Florence was a big market where everything was possible, and even a non-blue-blood-born could become a Duke.

How could someone acquire a non-inherited title?
In the XV century, Florence needed a new input in society, culture and arts, a way to say some noes to the medieval dark concept of human life they were coming out from, in order to elevate their souls above God, considering the human being as the unit of measure for buildings never seen before: the Medici were the answer.

A family of commissioners, art and philosophy lovers, supporters of young artists (just as Michelangelo!) since the beginning of their careers, giving them the chance to freely express themselves.

Beside their political and economic power, the Medici were great communicators, marketing and advertising pioneers: they did understand how it was fundamental to give their traits to mythological or biblical heroes.

In fact, Neptune’s face looks like Cosimo’s, in order to remind anybody walking across Signoria Square that he had got important marine goals, a member of the Medici’s family.

Nonetheless, a century before, Cosimo the Elder had adopted the ‘humility policy’, the ability to adapt oneself to the current events, another important peculiarity of the Medici.

We cannot talk about Florence putting the Medici aside, you will see it with your own eyes, this is just the beginning!
Finally, we will get to the latest branch, when the Medici will be obliged to give everything to the Austrian Lorena, in return for some guarantees and the “Family Pact”, which still makes Florence in possession of the great Medici collections, a heritage of Florentine people and nobody else’s.
