MICHELANGELO
We will get in touch with his life and deep connection with Florence, his family and the Medici’s one: from his paternal love for Lorenzo the Magnificent, to his aversion for Cosimo I and his following estrangement from the city.
We will see the most important masterpieces he has left to us: the magnificent statue of David at the Accademia Gallery, the perfect union between sculpture and architecture at the San Lorenzo new sacristy, his first steps as a sculptor at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello and the place of his burial, the great Basilica di Santa Croce.
Santa Croce holds many other masterpieces, such as the frescos made by Giotto, the crucifix made by Cimabue – which tragically witnessed the flood in 1966 – and the crucifix realised by Donatello, which began the provocation among him, Michelangelo and Filippo Brunelleschi (another Florentine genius in the Renaissance era, whose art was a source of inspiration and admiration for Michelangelo, too).
The guided tour may vary from 2 hours to 4 hours and, according to the visitors, it will be possible to include a quick visit to Casa Buonarroti, an artistic site where Michelangelo had lived before moving to Rome, which became a museum thanks to his grandnephew Michelangelo the Younger. Casa Buonarroti holds two masterpieces of Michelangelo’s first phase (“Madonna of the Stairs” and “Battle of the Centaurs”) and makes us understand the lasting heritage Michelangelo left to the following artists – we are not talking about decades, but centuries!
